DeWitt High School Bowling Teams recently competed in the 4A-5A East Conference Bowling Tournament at the Rice Bowling Center in Stuttgart. In thte team competitions, the boys placed 10th out of 12 and the girls placed 8th out of 12. In the individual competitions, (which is deteremined by high individual scorers outside of a qualifying team) the boys had Justin Carney, a junior, qualify as an individual competitor and Jacob Wolf, a junior, was a 3rd alternate. The girls did not have anyone to qualify as an individual competitor; however, Brooke Baker, a senior, was a 4th alternate.
According to an article printed in US Youth Bowler magazine, bowling is the fastest-growing sport this decade! The sport's participation numbers from 2001-2006 have increased more than any other -- including football, basketball, and wrestling.
In fact, in the 2006-07 season varsity high school bowling reached 45,000 participants across the country -- passing ice hockey!
Last fall, South Carolina private schools recognized bowling as a varsity sport, bringing the total number of states with varsity bowling programs to 20. Club bowling programs exist in 25 other states.
